What reviewers say

Both find it a conveniently sized prime with quick, quiet autofocus, but note colour fringing and less smooth background blur than some alternatives. Amateur Photographer considers the f/1.8 S sharper and recommends keeping it for most existing owners. TechRadar values the reliable native autofocus compared with an adapted DSLR lens but dislikes the missing AF/manual switch. Both see useful everyday and low-light capability at a lower price than premium alternatives. TechRadar raises weather-sealing concerns, although Nikon explicitly publishes qualified dust and drip resistance.
