What reviewers say
GSMArena and Mobile-review welcome the extensive features, colour display, music playback and useful organiser, while finding photo quality limited and transfers to the memory card slow. Both criticise the difficulty of reading interface text over dark wallpapers. GSMArena praises the keypad and quick operation, but encounters Outlook contact-ordering problems. Mobile-review reports creaking, loose covers on its samples and shorter endurance under heavier use. Battery results depend on workload; the reviews describe tested 2004 software and handsets.
Active-matrix TFT LCD with 65,536 colours, original Nokia brochure. No maker-published diagonal or refresh rate assigned.
Performance
Storage
8 MB
Memory
8 MB of user-data storage in the original German Nokia brochure, distinct from application/contacts shared memory. English issue 4 guide says contacts, messages, email, organiser and Java software share memory while gallery files use another pool. No total RAM capacity inferred from these pools or a reviewer's free-memory reading.
Storage type
Removable MMC card under the battery; SD cards do not fit and are incompatible, exact English guide. German brochure lists a supplied 32 MB card and optional 64/128 MB cards; contents vary by region. Larger-card results in reviews are not a universal maker compatibility guarantee.

Main camera
VGA 640 × 480-pixel rear camera, original Nokia brochure. JPEG photographs, portrait and night modes, self-timer and selectable image quality, English guide.
Video recording
3GP video with sound; guide gives a maximum clip duration of approximately four minutes depending on conditions. Only default-length or shorter clips can be sent by MMS. Brochure specifies H.263 video with AMR audio; streaming depends on the network.
Battery and charging
Wireless charging
None
Battery life detail
Removable BL-5C lithium-ion battery. German Nokia brochure specifies 850 mAh, 3–5 h talk and 150–300 h standby, dependent on network, SIM settings, use and surroundings. Later shared 6230/6230i service cover specifies a 900 mAh BL-5C; unresolved battery revision/region difference retained rather than assigning a universal capacity.
Wired charging
German Nokia brochure specifies approximately 1.5 h with ACP-12. Original English guide also documents ACP-7, ACP-8, ACP-12, LCH-9 and LCH-12 chargers. Proprietary charging socket; USB data support does not imply USB charging.

Colours
Graphite and Pearl White standard finishes; optional Green, Red, Brown and Tin Grey replaceable covers described and pictured in Mobile-review's full test. Gallery compositions and optional covers do not establish every regional box's contents.

Numeric keypad, five-way navigation/selection key, two selection keys, call/end keys, side volume keys and top power/profile key, English guide.
Water resistance detail
Original English guide explicitly states the phone is not water-resistant; no IP rating assigned.

Software
Operating system
Proprietary software
Software at launch
Nokia Series 40 platform; Java MIDP 2.0 in maker launch.
Software features
SMS, MMS with SMIL presentations, email, presence-enhanced contacts/chat, MP3/AAC music playback, calendar, to-do notes, wallet, calculator, alarm, stopwatch, countdown timer and Java games/applications. Streaming and messaging need compatible content and network services. Archived services are not asserted to remain operational.
Release detail
Announced 28 October 2003 with planned first-quarter 2004 shipments. Nokia's first-quarter 2004 financial report confirms shipments began during that quarter. Exact first worldwide sale month remains unresolved, so year precision retained. No explicit maker predecessor wording established.
Connectivity
Mobile network
RH-12 GSM 900/1800/1900; maker launch also identifies a GSM 850/1800/1900 regional variant. EDGE and GPRS, with HSCSD and xHTML browsing. Launch claims up to 236.6 kbit/s EDGE downlink; German brochure prints 236.8 kbit/s, retained as a source discrepancy rather than changing the maker launch figure silently. Network services depend on operator support.
SIM
Mini-SIM behind the removable battery, English guide.
Bluetooth
Bluetooth wireless technology and infrared; guide documents compatible headsets, file transfer, synchronisation and SIM access profile. No unsupported Bluetooth version inferred from a sibling model.
USB
Pop-Port connector and DKU-2 USB data cable for compatible PC Suite functions, English guide. Legacy software/download services are not claimed to remain available.
