Compute Module 4

Released October 2020

Raspberry Pi 4 on a 55 × 40 mm module with no connectors of its own, for building into products on a carrier board, with 1 GB to 8 GB of memory and optional eMMC storage and wireless.

Processor
Broadcom BCM2711 (Arm Cortex-A72)
Clock
1.5 GHz
Memory
1 GB – 8 GB
Wi-Fi

What reviewers say

Reviewers agree it puts Raspberry Pi 4 performance, native PCIe and optional wireless into a compact module well suited to embedded projects and custom carrier boards. Tom's Hardware found it expensive and suited only to those with the skills to design around it; Jeff Geerling found the official IO board large and the module fiddly to detach.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • PCIe Gen 2 x1 interface, unlike Raspberry Pi 4
  • Two 4-lane MIPI camera and display interfaces as well as two 2-lane ones
  • Versions rated for −20°C to +85°C, with extended-temperature ones down to −40°C

Cons

  • Needs a carrier board (such as the CM4 IO Board) for any ports
  • Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and eMMC depend on the version bought
  • 1.5GHz, slower than Raspberry Pi 4's current 1.8GHz
