Raspberry Pi 4 Model B

Released June 2019

The fourth-generation Raspberry Pi, with a quad-core Arm Cortex-A72 processor, 1 GB to 8 GB of memory and two micro HDMI outputs, still sold alongside Raspberry Pi 5 as a cheaper, cooler-running option.

What reviewers say

Reviewers agree it is a big step up from earlier Pis, much faster with USB 3, true Gigabit Ethernet and dual 4K output, at the same low price. The common criticism is that it runs hot under load; at launch 4K video decoding didn't work, and Tom's Guide noted it doesn't fit older cases and can be fussy about USB-C cables.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • USB 3.0 and full-speed Gigabit Ethernet, the first Raspberry Pi with both
  • Dual 4Kp60 display output
  • Keeps the 3.5 mm audio and composite video jack that Raspberry Pi 5 dropped

Cons

  • No PCIe connector
  • Slower than Raspberry Pi 5 (Cortex-A72 against Cortex-A76)
  • Early boards run at 1.5GHz by default rather than 1.8GHz
